How to Clean your Office Chair

Office chairs are one of the most heavily used pieces of furniture. A lot of us spend around 7 hours a day in our chairs, and offices can be full of bacteria, allergens and grime that isn’t always seen. If you have an adjustable chair with levers underneath, you would be surprised at the amount of dust and crumbs can accumulate.
Thankfully, your office chair is not difficult to clean. With the right products, you can keep your chair looking and smelling great for years to come. In this post, we will be sharing some helpful tips for routine office chair cleaning.

How Often?

If you want to keep on top of things, cleaning your office chair once a week is enough. However, if it’s been a while, we’d recommend doing a thorough, deep clean, and then maintaining it with weekly touch-up cleans.

To do a deep clean, start by vacuuming the seat. For fabric chairs, get some hot, soapy water, and a good cloth. Then, clean it with circular motions all over, leaving it to dry. This should leave it smelling fresh. Any stains can be removed with a standard stain remover, or alcohol wash.
To clean the arms, wheels, legs and hard surfaces of the chair, hot soapy water, and perhaps disinfectant is the way to go. For the trickier bottom parts, consider turning the chair upside down to make it easier to get into the nooks and crannies.

Cleaning Leather Office Chairs

Vacuuming is the best way to start cleaning a leather office chair, to remove any crumbs, lint or hair that might have gathered up over time. The small attachments on your vacuum cleaner will give you more precise results. Giving it a wipe down afterwards will remove any leftover particles – make sure to include the back, arms, legs and wheels!
If your chair has absorbed any unpleasant smells, using baking soda can help. Simply rub in the powder, leave it for around an hour, and vacuum it up. Soapy water and a soft cloth should remove any stains.
If your chair is made of real leather, it’s important to regularly use a leather seal. This is a top-coat sealant that will make sure your chair doesn’t crack or become damaged.

Cleaning Upholstered Office Chairs

The same techniques apply to the hard surfaces of a fabric chair, but there are some differences when it comes to cleaning upholstery.
As a starting point, hot, soapy water with a microfibre cloth or a standard kitchen sponge will be fairly effective. For stubborn stains that scrubbing won’t remove, there are plenty of specially made upholstery stain removal products available from your local supermarket, poundshop, or household store.
